For those students who meet the requirements, Students without Mothers provides one thousand dollars each year for four years. SWM accepts applications each year from September 1st – December 31st.
Colleges & Universities Offer Deceased Parent Scholarship Called Endowed Scholarships
When applying to a college or university, we suggest that you check to see if there are any Endowed Scholarships available for you to apply. If you are a student looking to go to Michigan colleges and universities then the Hubert & Dorthea Peckman Memorial Endowed is for you. This scholarship is available for students applying to Western Michigan University. This scholarship does have certain eligibility requires such as:
- Open to any student regardless of what they are studying
- Resident requirements of Allegan County or Southwest Michigan
- Must be willing to work to receive part of their education funding and be in financial need
- Those students from homes where both parents or one parents are deceased will receive preference
Scholarships For College Students Who Have Lost A Parent Due To A Brain Tumor

One such deceased parent scholarship is the George Bartol Memorial Scholarship Fund which was started in 2004 by his family.
Education was very important to Mr. Bartol and his family wanted to carry on his memory. Mr. Bartol battle brain cancer for eighteen months before losing that battle in 2004. The eligibility for this scholarship is:
- The student must have a parent that is either battling a primary brain tumor or have a parent who has died from one. The tumor must have started in the brain.
- Student must be accepted as a full time student in an accredited two or a four year college or university.
- Must be eligible to receive the scholarship for at least two terms.
States offer Scholarships for Students Who Have Lost a Parent
Many states offer programs in the form of grants and scholarships for their residents who attend public and community colleges within the state. An example of this is the Ohio War Orphan Scholarship. The Ohio War Orphans Scholarship offer tuition assistance to children who parents who served in the military during a declared conflict or war. The eligibility for this scholarship is:
- Undergraduate student must attend an eligible Ohio university or college and be enrolled full-time
- Student must be under 25
Application must be submitted by July 1st each year
